Cancer Conversations: Out of the Mouths of Medical Staff

Stupid Interesting things are said and or shared with you as a cancer journeyer. And not just from the layperson. No. Actually, some of the more inane eye-blinking comments come from medical personnel. Case in point: I was doing the phone intake with the scheduler at Scottsdale Medicial Imaging for my upcoming chest MRI. It was late in the day, and she was definitely a perky little thing. Sounded like someone good for work-day distraction around the water cooler.

Okay TC, let me pull up your information so we can get you scheduled. We have seen you before, correct? Ah. There you are. You popped right up. Let's go through the questions...blah, blah, blah...any history of cancer?

~ Yes.

What type.

~ Breast cancer. Metastatic.

Oh yes. There it is. July 2009. Oh honey, look at you surviving over two years now! You go girl!

~ Um. Yay me!

The rest of the conversation is just commentary.

  2. I know...it left me speechless. And that does not happen very often . I could barely grumble my "yay me!"

  4. Beth - I'm going to give her the benefit of the doubt, and think of her more as clueless. I had to laugh.

  5. TC I think to a lot of extent some of these people that make these statements have no idea what they say can seem as insensitive..some actually believe they are giving encouragement hmmm...As a few weeks ago someone tried to explain to me why I had the "Good Cancer since it was ONLY Breast Cancer"
I'm not a violent person but I seriously wanted to smack her for being so ignorant. In all reality some people really have no comprehension that there is no such thing as a "good cancer" Perhaps they have never been exposed to the disease or it's just easier being deaf dumb and blind....

  6. Alli, actually I have been thinking today of compiling another list of "Cancer Comments...Funny (?) Things People Say." I have seeing and hearing a lot of them lately. E.g., while I was lamenting about the chemicals and dyes in a food-product, a dear lady pipped up and said: "Well we all have to die of something!" I laughed and said, "sweetie...you know I have taken care of that already!"
